Hymns ruled at Forum 2008

Listening to: Nothing

During the last few days I've been getting back into normal life post-Forum, and I've been humming/singing/playing some of the songs that we did throughout the week. We had the latest Matt Redman and Martyn Layzell stuff (Shine, I Stand in Awe) and some cool Hillsong (Mighty to Save), of course a little Sovereign Grace (I will Glory in my Redeemer) as well as some more retro classics (All I Once Held Dear, Ancient of Days).

But three songs really stole the week for me. Three hymns. Now I'm not surprised by that for myself, but I'd be willing to have a punt and say that might be the case for everyone else as well. You can't really beat lyrics like these, can you?

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
’Tis an ocean vast of blessing, ’tis a haven sweet of rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ’tis a heav'n of heav'ns to me;
And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee.

~

Finished all the types and shadows
of the law that went before,
Finished all that God had promised;
death and hell no more shall awe;
'It is finished! 'It is finished!'
Saints, from hence your comfort draw.

~

When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see,
’Twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me.
How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
Is my Saviour’s love for me!

Great stuff. Nice tweak, sir (A bird - or rather fish - tells me it was you), to remove the ceremonial law from that verse. Much better now, whatever your view of the law!!

...singing 'types and shadows' in a song is a biblical theologicans dream!

Adrian- Yes, I thought it'd be far simpler and well... just better! No offence to Jonathan Evans and Benjamin Francis.

I hope plenty of people go and visit www.redmountainmusic.com as a consequence!

Bish- I know! Got to love that verse!

Shame we had to sing 'O the deep deep love...' to the tune 'O the trite and shallow...'

Grumble grumble grump grump.

I miss the 1900s.

Haha Dan you old grump.

The question is: would it have been better if we'd sung it to the tune of 'Oh the sad and mournful'?

Good hymns Sir. One Hymn which I'm trying to get people to sing more is It is Not Death to Die:

It is not death to die,
To leave this weary road,
And midst the brotherhood on high
To be at home with God.

It is not death to close
The eye long dimmed by tears,
And wake, in glorious repose,
To spend eternal years.

It is not death to bear
The wrench that sets us free
From dungeon chain, to breath the air
Of boundless liberty.

It is not death to fling
Aside this sinful dust
And rise, on strong exulting wing
To live among the just.

Jesus, Thou Prince of Life,
Thy chosen cannot die:
Like Thee, they conquer in the strife
To reign with Thee on high.

I think singing about death for the Christian is important. It's not something that we as believers should fear; but it is still one of those taboo subjects.

Sovereign Grace did a brilliant update of this hymn in their song version which you can find here.
